Emergency Preparation and Horse Rescue / Welfare
General Information
If you wish to help protect horses, and help rescued horses, we recommend
that you find and visit your local horse rescue organization. Your
donation of time, money, feed and supplies to an organization you are
familiar with can go a lot further than sending your money to a national
organization that spends most of its money on executive salaries and fund-raising,
and little or none on direct care for unwanted, neglected and abused horses.
Before donating anything to an organization, you should ask for a financial
statement to find out where the money goes. Also ask for proof of non-profit
status. Your donation is not tax-deductible without it. The organization is
required to show written proof of status (i.e. letter of determination) from
the IRS. If they refuse to do so after claiming to be non-profit, they can be
prosecuted. Remember that an organization can be non-profit but not necessarily
tax-exempt. A tax-exempt organization will be 501(c)(3), or possibly another
501 variation. All this must be provable in writing on official documents
from the IRS.
